This FRIDA top is the last in a mini collection of five up-cycled t-shrits turned tunics. Each one was made with a different patterned fabric in the back to contrast and compliment the image on the front.

Small details like lace inset shoulder stripes and a high-low flowly fit are unique to this last creation of the collection (until I can return to Mexcio and get more).

STORY/ Inspiration:

When I make clothes, I can feel when they have a home to go to. There's a feeling of something almost preverbal, primal, powerful; a rawness and also a deep connection to lineage. I feel a deep sense of gratitude for my ancestry (my grandmother taught me to sew) and a grace amidst the grittiness of this modern paced life. The feeling of slowing down to tansform literal scraps from our lives into whole pieces that serve the slow daily unfolidng of a rich and powerful tapestry of life. These garments symbolize our interconnectednss as whole and our uniqueness as an important part of that whole. Sometimes it takes a while, but each piece seems to land with its rightful person as they naviage their unique journey of a universal search for meaning.

This tunic:

Frida Kahlo has always been one of my all time favorite artists. Her incredible paintings and courageous life are a deep source of inspiration. Wearing her work helps me channel her courage and talent, no matter my activity.

Every time I go to Mexico, I make a point to look for nods to her. They are everywhere. I bought this and many other Frida t-shirts from local street vendors during my travels to Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and San Miguel de Allende. (Can you tell I love Mexico?!) It feels important to support the local entrepreneurs there and gives me a chance to exercise my creativity in honor of this amazing latina artist. What an icon.
